Can You See Us Vancouver?
How does one see the world when the view is from the seat of a wheelchair? How do artists living with a disability capture that vision? Can You See Us Vancouver? features works by 10 artists from across the country whose aim is to present a unique perspective – literal and metaphorical – of living and navigating a world that is rarely designed or organized to include their day-to day requirements.
In this exhibition organized by Kickstart Disability Arts and Culture, Curators Yuri Arajs and Emma Kivisild present works that give voice to the wide range of practices and approaches of artists who use a wheelchair and identify as living with a disability. However, ‘The wheelchair symbol does not tell the whole story. Not about disability, and not about using a chair.’ (Kivisild) nor do ‘all artists who live with disabilities make work about their disabilities’ (Arajs).
